What is a JSON URL-encoder?

learn more about this tool
This tool converts JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) data into URL-encoded data that can safely be embedded in web addresses. JSON is a popular format for storing and exchanging structured data, but it's not so easy to use directly in URLs. Some characters in JSON, such as spaces, colons, and quotes, have special meanings in URLs and may be interpreted incorrectly by browsers and backend software. The URL-encoding format solves this problem – these characters are replaced with special escape sequences that web browsers and backend software can interpret correctly. Non-alphanumeric characters are replaced with a percent sign (%) followed by a two-digit hexadecimal number. You can also enable the "Full Character Escape" mode in the options. This mode converts every character in your data (including letters and numbers) to URL encoding. Additionally, you can choose the case of the hexadecimal numbers – uppercase hex or lowercase hex. If you have JSON data that's already URL-encoded and want to reverse it and see the original JSON, you can use our URL-decode JSON tool. Json-abulous!

JSON URL-encoder examples

URL-encode a JSON Array
In this example, we URL-encode a simple JSON array containing four strings. By applying URL encoding, the syntactic JSON characters are converted into a web-safe format but the strings stay as-is. As a result, square brackets, quotes, spaces, and commas are replaced with percent signs followed by hexadecimal codes of the symbols.
["fdiv", "f00f", "meltdown", "spectre"]

Percent-encode a JSON Object
This example converts a JSON object with four key-value pairs into the percent encoding. In the output, all non-alphanumeric characters are escaped via a percent sign but the regular alphabet letters and numbers are not modified.

All JSON Character URL-escape
In this example, we URL-escape a JSON object that represents weather data. The input JSON object consists of four keys and another nested object. By enabling the "Full Character Escape" option, we transform all characters in the data, including letters and numbers, into matching hex codes.
